Scottish Governance Code consultation open for responses

Recent OSCR research found that good governance is one of the top things that promotes trust in charities. People want to see charities are being ‘run well’. They want to know that the money or time they choose to put into an organisation is well looked after. In fact they expect it. At SCVO, we want to support Scotland’s third sector to be the best it can be. That’s why we’re a member of Scotland’s Third Sector Governance Forum – a dedicated bunch of governance geeks who want to work together to improve governance and leadership in our sector. Since the end of last year, the Forum has been working to develop a Scottish Governance Code for the Third Sector. It was something we felt was needed, and there was such a positive response to the idea that Scottish Government provided some seed funding to help make it happen. We’ve said all along that we want to create a Code that’s for the sector, by the sector, and we need your help to make sure we’ve got it right. From chief execs to trustees, directors of social enterprises, committee members of voluntary organisations, TSIs, lawyers or the public – we’d really appreciate it if you could take part in our consultation. The Forum plans to launch the Code in Trustees Week in November. At SCVO we’ve enjoyed being part of the process to bring the Code to life, and as part of our I Love Charity campaign to inspire trust in charities, we’ll be throwing our full weight behind promoting it to our members and the sector as an important resource.
